Abstract

ON AUXILIARY ELEMENTS OF TURKISH SYNTAX
In the studies on Turkish syntax, sentence elements are accepted mainly as subject, verb, adverbial clause, object, indirect object s and the elements out of sentence. The term “elements out of sentence” is conducted by the researchers as “auxiliary elements”, “instruments out of sentence”, “elements out of verb”, “head-sentence clauses”, “independent clauses”, indirect objects” or “noun clauses”. It is the matter which should be thought in detail that how the elements out of sentence could be named in the sentence; that is there is a “term” problem. It is clear that the term “elements out of sentence” is not totally accepted as true. Until today, in addition to the term “elements out of sentence”, researchers have used a lot of different terms that are mentioned above. The most meaningful of these terms are “sentence clauses”, “independent clauses” and “head-sentence clauses”. However it is not a right view to accept them correctly; because these terms, for instance exclamation sentences, conjunctions that are used at the beginning of the sentences etc. can affect the meaning of a sentence, but these elements cannot be a sentence. Briefly, these items are not clauses like a subject, object, adverb or indirect objects; these are not be determined as asking questions to the verbs, however they can affect the meaning in some way. For this reason, it is a right view to accept the subject, object, adverb and indirect objects the main elements of a sentence; and also the others which are mentioned above could be accepted as auxiliary elements. So, these are the helpful elements, but not clauses. Therefore, it is true that these can be named as auxiliary elements. It is also surprising that there is not specific information on the names of “elements out of sentence” and also there is not any specific information about which kinds of structures can be helpful for a sentence in the current studies. In some studies completed until today, only exclamation of address groups have been thought in this group, additionally some other researchers have thought that head-sentence conjunctions are in this group, and also some others have thought clauses could be in this group. In addition to the main questions as “Is only one of them in this group or are all of them in it?”, there are a lot of questions waiting for answers such as “Is only exclamation of address in this group or what can be done for others like emotional exclamation?” or “What is the meaning of digression?”, “Are noun clauses or relative clauses just clauses or are they elements out of sentence?” In this study, how the elements out of sentence could be named, that is the “term” issue will be discussed and it is asked that which kinds of structures could be the elements out of sentence.
